Whams “FLAG” day!

Thanks’ lads (assuming that it was the male of the species that did the heavy lifting)!

That looks a very tidy job and much appreciated.

Can I make a bit of an appeal now please? At the AGM 2005 we agreed to demolish the bunker because it was occasionally under the flight path of landing models and if you landed short you hit it. Even though this was agreed nobody ever bothered to remove it and it remained a very useful and very secure store for items not often used. Now we are at the same side of the field as the bunker it falls within the no fly zone irrespective of where the bottom fence of the pit area is so it should no longer present a threat to any model if it is in the correct bit of airspace.

We lived with it for five years when we had agreed to demolish it and it was supposed to be a hazard. Now it is no longer in the way of anything can I ask that this very useful bit of storage space that was built by the 1991 club chairman, Arthur Henderson, John Woodhouse, Charlie Porter and myself be left in piece not in pieces.

Two new members Mike and Rob enjoying the Wednesday evening session accompied by Ed Cockburns sheep.

A nice selection of models as well.

I know that they both liked the site from their comments and so welcome to the club together with their pal Steve who has not managed to get to the field yet.

16th August 2010

According to the Met Office today was the last day it will be fit to fly for a while so I took myself off to the Whams for a relaxing afternoon. I was a bit worried that I may not be able to fly because according to the weather site the wind would be "brisk" and come from the North. According to some this is an impossable direction to fly from and highly dangerous for spectators. It was a therefore very pleasing to find that most of the people who say this were on the field and by and large having no problems with the wind even after all the thermals generated on August 5th.
I had a realy good time but must wonder who was nominated safety officer when the cone was in one place and everyone except me appeared to ignore it completely.

I have fixed the chain on the gate to the road so that the thieves cannot just lift it over the post as I found it today when I passed. the photos below are self explanitary - I think.

This is the way to the ALL NEW helicopter circles in the next field.

LITTER

I know we may be moveing soon but there is no excuse for leaving the pit area like this.
Dennis Clarkson cleaned up on Thursday and I found all this had been left by Saturday.

2nd June 2010

Didnt get any pictures but the Wednesday club was in full swing on the site today. Must have been 20 people there at one o'clock! John Mosley told me they were, or it might have been a different crew, still at it this evening until almost sunset.
I hope the H4H day has weather like this, flying all day should be no problem if it is calm and sunny.
The helies were out in force again and having to fly slots - never mind it won't be too long now when you can have a field of your own, that is if your model is on 2.4GHz.
Another thanks to Dave Baker who has made two more Heli-benches and has gifted them to the club. Thank's Dave very much appriciated! Might get a picture of one sometime.

23rd May 2010

The first two days of the field trial are now over  and I attended and flew and didn't crash on both days. On Saturday the wind blew from the East, what there was of it and on Sunday we had a steady breeze from the West. This allowed us to test the BMFA layout in both the two most common directions of flight.
As a Trustee of the club I am not going to make any comment as to what members thought of the arrangemet for flying in these two directions but I will say that I have received many, and some conflicting thoughts about the layout.
One thing I will mention however is that I feel vindicated in sticking to my guns when someone, I forget who, emailed me saying that we could easily get 40 cars in the car park. On Saturday there were fourteen cars on site and twelve was the maximum we could get on the longer edge of the site. I would now like to revise down my estimate of twenty six cars to twenty three.
Club membership now stands at 139 about average for this time of year and old and new members are flying almost every fine day of the week sometime in large numbers as I observe from my almost daily trips past the field even if I do not manage to fly myself.
11 cars so far, more arrived later.

I miss the benches, I am getting too old to kneel on the floor.

9th May 2010

All is now soiled, seeded and piles of muck shifted, not to mention cut, rolled and harrowed.
Saturday and Sunday saw a small team, a too small digger and a too large dumper complete the roadway and also the huge mound of muck was moved to the other side of the field.
A big round of thanks to Mark Edmonds, Bill Wood and Alastair Birks who gave up some of their time on Saturday to shovel, level, rake and seed the new areas. Biggest thanks of all to "team Mosley" with Andrew opperating the flying digger and John rolling and harrowing almost as fast.

Andrew leveling while the modified roller/mower prepares to roll.
Wide open spaces and no lumps now.

NEW BEARINGS

I got this message from Joe Priestnal which he asked i pass on to members. Sounds OK to me!

Hi Alec.

Further to our conversation yesterday i thought club members may be interested in the following.I needed a replacement main bearing for my 'OS' 46 FX and therefore contacted ' Calda Morley bearings, Dewsbury Road Wakefield (01924 291882) who offered me a std steel bearing OR a stainless steel alternative ! which i have ordered. The obvious benefit is that this bearing (in theory) may never need changing as it will not be affected by corrosion as did the original ! The price £ 8.50 !

Regards Joe Priestnall

Got this nice letter from the supplier of the "Hexapath" plastic paving today.

April 5th 2010

Thank you toJohn, Kieth, Dave, Alastair and Joe who all gave up their Easter Monday break to help lay the tiles at the Whams.
I am too Kna****ed to type so let a few pictures speak for themselves.

8am Start

The stacking/packing team at work.

Just three of us left, Alastair took the picture.

Just take me to Alastair's "Works" John where I can rest forever!

DAY 2

Soil Panic Day!

By lunchtime it was obvious that the soil was going to be used up - SACK THE ESTIMATOR!
Panic over some more is coming early tomorrow if the driver can find the site!
Pictures of todays work nearly down the car park now - almost!

How about turning this nice flat area into the runway and parking in the fiel?
(If anyone thinks I am being serious I'm not!)

DAY 3

Soil arrived at 7.30am! Far too soon for me to be directing waggon drivers to our site!

Only one more load to come - I hope!

We are just about starting onto the track. A bit of leveling is needed where the vehicles have run over the crushed stone.

Anyone feel like counting the hexagons?

That's what a quarter acre of recycled plastic looks like.

DAY 4

Back towards the car park.

FRIDAY Day 5

The end -Almost!

It's a long long trail a winding!

Remember all those dead twigs we planted in January.

Oh! Ye of little faith!

Saturdayyyyyyyyyyyyyy and YES we are flying again!

Thank you lads for being so patient and waiting for a couple of hours while the workmen worked on the car park area.
Just a few final photographs to round the job off and to let you know that we still have about 17 cubic metres of soil to spread on the track that we will have to do ourselves when I can get some more. It shouldn't be too dificult it only has to be spread, rolled and seeded.

That is more like our flying site.

"Come on Dad - don't sit about watching let's get on and fly this"
