Places to Eat – Close to our Flying Fields

The Windmill Café

Situated less than a mile from the Whams field is a small garden centre (next to the coal yard and just past the last wind turbine) which is open every day EXCEPT MONDAYS. For about a fiver you can get a number of hot meals and a coffee. It’s a very friendly place and very popular with the lads in lycra and the Penistone Pensioners. Most of us should feel at home with either of these groups.

My description is cheap and cheerful in the true meaning of the word and I would recommend it in preference to sandwiches on our field especially in the colder months.

Directions from the Whams take the top road towards the wind turbines and when you have passed the last one turn left.

The Yummy Yorkshire Ice Cream Co

Don’t be put off by the name and even though it’s main business is selling award winning ice cream they do one of the best bacon and egg tea-cakes I have ever tasted.

It is quite a small café but in summer they extend it to a large marquee plus if the weather is good there is plenty of al fresco places to be had. It is a good place to go if you have your children or grandchildren with you. There are plenty of farm animals for the children to look at and a very safe play area which quite often has a free bouncy castle in the corner.

This establishment is open seven days a week from 10am until about 5pm.

Directions from the Whams turn right out of the gate and right again at the bottom of Brown’s Edge Road. Take the next left and follow this road to the deep end of Ingbirchworth reservoir and turn left onto the top of the dam wall. When you arrive at a tee junction with the Huddersfield / Penistone Road turn left and the café is about 300 yards up on the left.

The Fountain Pub

I wouldn’t recommend this place for a lunchtime snack unless you are a very big eater. The food is excellent however and reasonably priced and comes with a good selection of beer, wine or spirits.

This, I think, would be a good place to call in the early evening after a flying session especially if you have the family with you and want to reward them for putting up with all the oily models.

A couple of years ago they used to do a pensioners evening meal if you got in before six thirty which was two courses and coffee/tea for a very reasonable sum. I think the pub has now been refurbished so I do not know if this is still available.

Directions from the Whams turn right out of the gate and right again at the bottom of Brown’s Edge Road. Take the next left and follow this road to the deep end of Ingbirchworth reservoir and turn left onto the top of the dam wall. When you reach the opposite bank the road turns right and The Fountain is immediately on the left.
